Many people find themselves in a situation where they need a root canal surgery. However, many times this procedure isn’t practical for all patients, and can sometimes be unsuccessful. In those cases, this is where an apicoectomy comes in.

Apicoectomy Procedure

An apicoectomy is a procedure one performs through the gums and bone to reach and remove any tissue infection around the end of the tooth root. A surgeon makes a small incision above the tooth at the level of the gums. This allows them to remove the infected tissue causing the problem. After they remove the tissue and a small portion of the end of the root, they will place a filling at the end of the root. This insures they seal the tooth and no further infection can spread. When these steps are completed, the surgeon places small stitches in the gums, and the procedure is complete. To verify healing the surgeon will take appropriate xrays at specified intervals after the procedure.

In terms of aftercare, this procedure requires very little downtime, and many people return to their regular schedule the day after. Many times, you will even be able to drive yourself home – all of which, your surgeon will discuss with you prior to your appointment.

While much less common than root canals, this procedure is another solution we utilize here at Dental Specialty Associates to provide the best possible care of our patients. To speak to one of our doctors, give us a call at 602.795.5995!
