Warning Signs
First and foremost, you need to know the warning signs. Oral cancer can present itself in many ways. Whether it be an abnormality of the lips, tongue, gums, cheek, throat, and the roof and floor of your mouth. In any of these places, oral cancer can present itself as inflammation, open sores, red or white growths, or discoloration of the tissue. You may also feel unexplained numbness in your mouth, or feel pain in your mouth, throat, and even your ears.
Diagnosis
So what happens when you see a symptom of oral cancer? The first step is to stay calm. Often when we attempt to self-diagnose, and we mean very often, we tend to misdiagnose, as we’re not all experts like a dentist is. The second is to make an appointment with your dentist. As your dentist is the person who works closest with the mouth, they have the primary role of detecting any and all problems. If it is oral cancer, your dentist will be able to take a look and complete all tests needed to properly diagnose.
